COUNTDOWN | TOP 10 2014 LAGOS DISCOVERIES - FINALE

Drumroll please.....   At Number one we have:

1.) THE BiL DIRECTORY

Now I know this isn't really a discovery, seeing as I created and run it. BUT, I feel as though it's still a discovery and I can't really explain it.

My initial idea was to create an online beauty directory, but I felt why would anyone trust the businesses listed? So I decided to start a blog, review beauty establishments around town, get the blog to act like a tried-and-tested directory, THEN start working on and designing my online directory.

I wish there had been something of this sort when I moved back to Lagos, and I really hope the directory has been of some use to most of you guys.

I would like to say a HUGE thank you to all the businesses that took a chance with me and decided to get listed on the directory, without you all there will be no directory, literally.

I have big big plans for 2015, already in talks to upgrade the site, going to get 100+ businesses listed before the end of 2015.

Thank you so much to every single one of you that has been part of my Beauty In Lagos journey all through 2014. I have got a 4-phase plan for BiL phase 1 is this here blog, successfully launched phase 2 in 2014, looking to launch 3 in 2015! Will definitely share all the information in due course...

Please visit THE BiL DIRECTORY for all your beauty needs. We've got hair vendors, makeup vendors, spas, nail salons etc. listed.

Be safe wherever you are tonight, be merry, be happy and most importantly remember to be extremely humbled and grateful to be here! Speak to you all in the New Year and once again THANK YOU!

Lots of love,

COUNTDOWN | TOP 10 2014 LAGOS DISCOVERIES - Part 2

Hello!

Welcome to the 365th day of 2014! INSANE!!

So, carrying on from yesterday's post (which you can read here), here's my top 4 discoveries this year.

5.) HAIRVEN HAIR CARE PRODUCTS

I am a little disappointed I hadn't bothered to try these out sooner, but I am happy I finally did.

Quite a few of my friends having read my review of these products, went out and bought the entire range. They did not just buy it, they actually used it as I had directed! I was truly humbled by this, because although I type these posts advising you guys use certain products a certain way, I never actually believe anyone's going to do that! It's nuts...

These products all come with instructions on the back detailing how to use them, so if you do not feel comfortable following my guidelines, please go along with Hairvens' ;). Definitely an awesome discovery which I am taking with me into 2015 and beyond!

Where to Buy

4.) R & R LUXURY

I am still trying to figure out how they managed to get Shea to remain in a permanent 'oil' state! . Since July, when I discovered R & R Luxury, their body oil in 'Serenity' has been all I have been using exclusively as my all-over-body moisturiser. Absolutely nothing else. And these last a long time, I'd say a good 2-3 months (I had my pesky little sister using mine  along with me, so I can't tell you exactly how long it lasts. If only she would allow me be a great beauty-blogger so I can come at you guys with facts! lol). I have even got 2 brand new ones chillin' as backup and I pray they never stop making these, because I cannot imagine using anything else at this point! So thank you R& R Luxury for your body oils!

3.) SAVVY & CHIC HAIR BEAUTY HUB

One thing I always discuss with my friends is that, here in Lagos we've got quite a few hair-stylists that no how to 'lay' a weave and 'slay' your hair. But these same stylists and MORE have not got a clue how to take care of the clients' real hair. I was once sat in a salon and this customer was telling the stylist relaxing her hair about this thing her colleague mentioned called 'Moisturizing & Sealing', and asked what product could do that. This stylist goes off on an epistle, how a certain product they sell for thousands of Naira will do the job, blah blah blah. I just had to interject very politely and say that 'Moisturizing & Sealing' is just a process of moisturising your hair from root to tip with a good hair moisturizer (preferably water-based) and then sealing that moisture in using an oil or even oil-based moisturiser will do the trick in one. I just could not stand the stylists blatant ignorance and rather say she had no idea, was trying to rope the poor customer into parting with her cash.

This is why I absolutely love the Savvy & Chic salon, it is run my hair-blogger Dabs and she knows her onions when it comes to healthy hair. Every time I am around her I go straight to asking hair-related questions! If you have been after a good hair salon, I will recommend Savvy & Chic salon!

2.) STELLA'S ADDICTION

I like to consider myself a bit of a personal makeup artist. And by 'personal', I mean ME, my own makeup artist. I can 'beat' my own face quite well, if I do say so myself. And because of this, I have sort of become a Makeup Artist's (MUAs) nightmare. I am that girl, who, after getting her makeup done ALWAYS goes back in with her own eyeliner, or darken the crease or waterline. I am just hardly ever 100% satisfied, until I got my makeup done by Stella of Stella's Addiction. I mean, I did STILL go over my makeup after she was done, but it was the happiest I'd ever been with an MUA in a long time. And the amount she charges for a makeover is possibly one of the cheapest out here. She starts at NGN 6,500 and then if you want extras added on, it'll cost you. For example, you want false lashes it's NGN 2000 if you haven't got your pair and NGN1000 if you do etc.

Apart from makeovers, she also grooms eyebrows by threading. Once again, thank you so much for actually taking my advice, Stella has mentioned a few times that quite a number of you have visited her studio to get your brows groomed after I published this review on the blog! I have even had a couple of you tag me on instagram! She really is a brow-whiz and if you need yours groomed please visit Stella's studio, I promise you will not regret it!

Ok, we'll take a very short breather!

COUNTDOWN | TOP 10 2014 LAGOS DISCOVERIES - Part 1

Hiya!

It's the 364th day of 2014 and I just can't help but feel incredibly blessed! I always get reflective around this time every single year and I thought, why not incorporate that somehow on the blog. So I decided to do a countdown of my favourite finds all around Lagos in 2014.

So, here's part 1 in descending order....

10. INGLOT STORE

The fact that an Inglot store was opening up in Lagos really got me excited and I really do believe that we will see a lot more international brands setting up shop around these parts next year!

Address:
The Palms Mall, Oniru

9. YSL STAND AT ESSENZA

Photo cred: www.wmagazine.com
I still believe that most people are no aware that there is a fully-stocked YSL counter in Essenza stores. The YSL stand in the Essenza store at the Palms, Lekki has got everything from Touche Éclat to their variety of lipsticks. This was very much an exciting discovery for me this year.

Address:
The Palms Mall, Oniru

8. POLO AVENUE

Photo cred: www.pinterest.com
Let's be honest, luxury designer items have been sold in Lagos for years. BUT, there were always two main concerns: 1.) The exorbitant price points and 2.) The authenticity of the merchandise. With Polo Avenue, all those concerns can be left behind because they are official retailers of a few luxury brands like Gucci, Balenciaga, Jimmy Choo & Feragammo (I may have missed out a couple) in Nigeria. I have purchased a couple items from them this year and honestly the price difference when I checked a certain item I got against that of it's counterpart in the actual store online, it was just $5, no word of a lie. I need more of such stores to open up though ;)

Address:
166 Ozumba Mbadiwe, Street VI

7. SOCIAL PLACE

Photo cred: www.thesocialplacelagos.blogspot.com

This is sort of like a hidden event space in Lagos. One thing I do NOT understand is why it is still 'hidden', although I feel they have gained a lot of momentum this year with quite a few high-profile events being held there, including the launch of Nollywood actress, Genevieve Nnaji's clothing line on Jumia. I particularly love their bridal shower packages, which start from from NGN 7,500 per person. And with that, you get the venue, buffet style food, decor, cupcakes and games. They have a lovely outdoor garden which can be hired for an event and also fully-airconditioned indoor spaces. I have known about Social Place a couple years, but only made use of their bridal shower package this year and was thoroughly impressed. Not everyone's got a huge budget to hire out an event space, and it's really nice to see that there is someone in the market that offers a budget friendly service without scrimping on the quality

Address
33 Sinari Darinjo, Victoria Island, Lagos

6. TASALA HQ

Remember this post where I mentioned I had to send my hair extensions to Amsterdam to get them dyed. A few months after that I was chatting with Dabs and she mentioned this hair stylist she discovered on instagram. After going through her pictures, I decided to send her an email. One thing led to another and soon enough I was dropping off my hair extensions to be dyed. She did an awesome job, and I will be reviewing her services on the blog in the new year! Her weave installation is honestly the best I have had. The last weave I had installed by her lasted 4weeks and even at that it was still flawless, I just needed to take it down to pamper my own hair. Look out for my full review post in the new year!

Address:
Opral Benson Beauty Training Institute
9, Thornborn Avenue,
Off Otunba Tos Benson Avenue,
Sabo, Yaba, Lagos.

So that brings me to the end of Part 1 of this countdown. If you've read my blog or followed me on my social media platforms all through the year, some of these aren't news to you. But it is nice to have them all in one post which you can bookmark or save via bloglovin'

Part 2 tomorrow...

EXCLUSIVE NIGERIA LAUNCH | RALPH LAUREN POLO 'SUPREME OUD'

Hello Everyone,

On Tuesday the16th December 2014, I was graciously invited over to the Oriental Hotel in Lekki for the launch of a new fragrance by Ralph Lauren. L'Oreal Luxe that recently setup shop here; responsible for brands like Lancôme and YSL in Nigeria (mentioned in my post here) are also behind this as well.

The 'Polo Oud' fragrance was being launched for the first time ever (worldwide) right here in Lagos, Nigeria. This was what was said at the event! And will be exclusive to the Middle East and Africa regions.

If you fancy yourself a bit of a perfume connoisseur (like my little sister I invited as my plus-one to the event), you should be familiar with the other fragrances by Polo: Polo Red, Blue etc., and this is not to be confused with 'Polo Black'. This is a brand new fragrance they only just launched, 'Supreme Oud'.

I believe most of us are familiar with Oud scents. I have mentioned numerous times that I am rubbish at describing scents, but I did learn at the event that the very unique scent of Oud is obtained from a rare species of Agarwood trees found in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, is the most expensive ingredient included in perfumery. It's actually valued at approximately 1 and a half times more than gold.

Like with all Oud scents this perfume is no different. That distinct 'heady' intensely unique oud aroma is present and cannot be mistaken. This is the first masculine Eau De Parfum, yes it is for men. But it works pretty fine for me, and my sister certainly had NO complaints :).

For you guys who know a bit more about perfume than I do, I took notes for y'all ;) (There was an entire video presentation on this). This perfume was created by Master Perfumer Carlos Benaim, whose vision was to bring a new interpretation to an oud fragrance. He describes it as "memorable, masculine and intoxicating".

Intoxicating is right! I wore this today and as I am sat typing this I can still smell it very strongly and this is 5 hours in. Top Notes: Cinnamon & Pink Pepper, Mid Note: Smoky Oud & Base Notes Guaiac Vetiver Wood

Where To Buy

Store: Essenza Stores Nationwide
Launch: 2015

In Lagos Essenza Stores are located at both The Palms and Ikeja City Malls as well as Prince Ebeano Supermarket in Lekki Phase 1

If you guys know anymore Essenza locations around the country, please share in the comments section.

I'd like to ask, would like for me to take some pictures at these events I am invited to? No red carpet style post or pictures of people. Just some shots to capture the ambience (if I can) and make it seem like you all attended the event with me. Let me know in the comments section and I will definitely make an effort to lug my camera around with me

Hope you all enjoyed this post!

ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS | TAMANNA PALETTE - Review & Swatches

Hiya,

Like I mentioned in my last post about the palettes by Anastasia Beverly Hills (ABH), next on my 'hit list' was the 'Tamanna' palette. If you would like to better understand the concept behind each of these palettes, you should read this post as I would (naturally) be comparing this palette with the 'Amrezy' one.

You know what's weird, I was initially just interested in the 'Amrezy' palette because she was the only one out of all the online beauty-gurus involved I was familiar with. And then when ABH announced that they would be releasing another with @DressYourFace's Tamanna Roashan and they revealed the colours in the palette, my interest was piqued. Bare in mind I had already ordered and paid for the 'Amrezy' palette at this time.

You know when you see something for the first time and all of a sudden you just start noticing it almost everywhere? That's what happened with Tamanna, not the palette 'Tamanna', but the actual makeup artist. So seeing more of her work and her skills and her love for OTT Glam makeup like myself, I decided to purchase the 'Tamanna' palette.

Tamanna's signature makeup look is a bold cut crease and an Arabic Eye and she believes both can be achieved using this palette.

The palette comes with these handy 'Get The Look' cards, which I love! You know how you watch makeup tutorials on youtube and you want to recreate it, but you haven't got a few of the shadows used. These cards are just genius!

Review

All the shades in this palette are well-pigmented and blend beautifully. It holds 4 matte and 6 beautiful soft shimmery/frost-finish shades.

Anastasia Beverly Hills 'Tamanna' Palette - N7,500

I get a lovely transition colour out of 'Bengal', a crease definer/darkener from 'Chocolate' and outer corner and brow bone shades from 'Noir' and 'Fresh' respectively. So the matte shades are all awesome for defining the eye. The shimmery/frost finishes are mostly neutrals with the exception of 'Venezia', which is a lovely teal and 'Bengal' a rich cranberry shade. I like to use 'Venezia' along my lower lashline for a nice pop of colour and 'Bengal' sometimes in the crease. All the other shimmery shades are great lid colours. I particularly love 'Blush' and 'Gilded'. 'Custom' is a unique one, it's a medium beige/brown shade which can be used together with 'Noir' to create a very interesting smokey eye. 'China Rose' and 'Bengal' I don't quite like. I personally don't like wearing eyeshadows in the Red-tone family and these fall under that for me. Something about them just doesn't work with my skintone/eyes, they make me look sick for some odd reason. That being said, I am partial to a bit of 'China Rose' on my lid with a nicely smoked out crease and bold liner smoked out on the edges into my outer v.

Swatches

'Tamanna' vs 'Amrezy'

I won't be very good beauty blogger if I did not compare these palettes for you guys and assist you make an informed decision. These palettes are not priced cheaply out here, with prices ranging from N7,500 - N8,500, I personally would appreciate some sort of comparison before I buy.

I have clearly marked the shades I found very similar with the overscript 'Dupe'. Thankfully they are just two shades out of each palette, which is forgiveable in my opinion.  And a black shade is expected in any makeup palette, so can't be considered a repitition. Now to the big question which would I recommend you buy? I'd say the 'Amrezy' palette. Why? Because the colours in the 'Amrezy' palette are a lot more versatile. Like I mentioned when I reviewed the 'Amrezy' palette, you can literally travel with this palette alone and you've got all your looks covered... tried and tested! Also, the 'Amrezy' palette shades are more pigmented. The 'Tamanna' palette shades are pigmented, but I feel those in 'Amrezy' are just that much more pigmented.

All in all, I am very pleased I've got both palettes and I do find myself simultaneously using shades from both, so no regrets from me. There is one more palette in the ABH limited edition collaborations and that's called the 'Maya Mia' palette. I don't think I'll be getting that, but I'd love to hear some feedback from anyone who's got that in their stash. Please let me know what you think in the comments section

BRAND INTRODUCTION | HAIRVEN

Hello there and TGIF!!

I always emphasise that your virgin hair extensions are just as important as your natural hair. I treat mine pretty much the same way I treat my hair. Obviously there's no prepoo, tea rinse, deep-condition with heat, chill... BUT, we pay a lot of money for these extensions and should make the effort to care for them.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered there was a full range of hair care products dedicated solely to extensions. I am talking shampoo, conditioner right through to leave-in and serum.

Hairven is an indigenous brand, and quite frankly the first of its kind that I have ever heard of, ever. Listen, we need to believe that most of these our homegrown brands understand quality is key and should not be given a side eye because they're championed by our fellow Nigerian.

As some of you may know, from my instagram page, my hair at the moment is blonde, which means it has been bleached to attain it's current colour. Bleaching dries out the hair, I got mine done professionally and the lady did an awesome job restoring moisture to it after all the dyeing. But I notice that with lightened hair I always need to apply some serum to my hair, especially the ends, before I use any heat, otherwise I get crunchy hair and split ends.
This happened to me a week ago, and I suffered crunchy, dry hair throughout the week that followed and I could not wait to put Hairven to the test. Below is a step-by-step of how I used the products

REVIEW

Hairven Hair Extensions Conditioner - N1,500*
I always start my hair extension (even my natural hair) wash with conditioner, yup you read that right, and I start off with dry hair. I read somewhere that hair is like a sponge and if you start with it dry, it will absorb everything better. I apply conditioner from top to bottom, coating the hair all through and then running a wide-tooth comb through to make sure that I get the product distributed evenly. I usually wash my extensions when they're off my head and in bundles, so I just wrap them up in some old carrier bags and leave alone for 15mins. But this time, I had them in as a weave, so I just cross-pinned my hair up with two hair 'crabs' and headed off to the salon to get it rinsed out.

Hairven Hair Extensions Conditioner - N1,500*
I must've had the conditioner in my hair about 20mins by the time I got to the salon, so it wasn't in too long. I strongly advice you don't leave the conditioner longer than 30mins max, I won't even push it that long. Because from personal experience, where I left it in too long, it weighed the hair down and just left it limp and without volume, even after a blowdry. Before they rinsed the conditioner out, I put some shampoo in an applicator bottle, mixed in water to dilute and asked the guy washing my hair to run this all through my scalp between the braids and weft. This way I get my scalp and weft clean and when he rinsed it all out the shampoo would run down the strands of the extensions also cleansing them in the process. If it hadn't been on my head, I would have applied the diluted shampoo to the weft in a bundle and washed it in my palm using circular motion, then rinsed it through the strands.

Hairven Hair Extensions: Leave-in N1,400* & Serum N1,600*

Once done rinsing, I was put under a hooded dry to get my braids and weft dry.

Once I felt the hair extensions were about 70% dry, I asked him to apply a few spritz of the leave-in to the extensions, concentrating on the ends

Once my extensions, braids and wefts were 100% dry, he applied a dime size of serum to his palms, rubbed them together and ran it through my hair, once again concentrating on the ends.

He blowdried my hair to stretch it out and then curled it all through using a curling iron. Results? Silky, bouncy, shiny hair.

I had really high hopes for these products and they met all my expectations. Even now my hair has a 'glow' to it and it is so soft.

Will I recommend Hairven to you? ABSOLUTELY! I love these products, they actually revived my hair. Now you do not necessarily need to use them my way, feel free to do what you want with them. But I am very impressed with these and already talking my friends and family into getting some.

Prices
Prices vary from retailer to retailer, but the below prices are if you buy direct from Hairven:

BRAND INTRODUCTION | TAOS COSMETICS

Hey Everyone,

Before I get into this post, want to let you all in on the series of Christmas giveaways I will be running next week. As a THANK YOU to all my followers across all my social media platforms, I will be having a giveaway for each. The instagram giveaway will be in conjunction with the blog, a facebook giveaway and a twitter giveaway. It is the season of giving, and is in addition to the #ChristmasWithBiL offers I have arranged with various beauty-businesses (ps: this started last week Friday by the way)

I will share all the information in a post very very soon, but let's get into this one right now. Before I started blogging I never realised how many small/medium beauty brands there are out there and also those still springing up. Most people only know the big name brands like MAC, Iman, Nars, BlackUp, etc., but a few of these upcoming businesses should also be patronised. I find that with such businesses, they haven't got a wide variety of products and shades to choose from, but they do bring something unique to the market place.

TAOS COSMETICS

Taos Cosmetics is one of such businesses. It's run and owned by a lovely lady called Vanessa. She reached out to me in September introducing her brand and about a month after sent me some of the products to try out. It's a fairly new brand and she's decided to start off with versatile products like lipsticks, lipglosses, eyeshadows, bronzers and blushes.

I was particularly taken by the eyeshadows I was sent. The packaging in their cardboard boxes is quite similar to MAC's but that's where the similarities, in terms of packaging, end.

'Big Daddy' - N2,700*

The lid is a screw cap, which is nothing like MAC's. This shade is a nice frost-finish bronze, that blends beautifully and does not crease. (NB: I always use a primer/base on my eyes before I apply my shadows. I never review shadows without a base because I naturally hardly ever wear one without. So I honestly will not be able to tell how a shadow reacts without a base, and I don't know why you won't apply a base before your eyeshadow -__-) ).

'Black Orchid' - N2,700*

A grey-black with duo-chrome gold specks that just blend in beautifully when applied. This is not as pigmented as I expected from looking at it in the tub. But nonetheless, its a lovely dark grey that can be used as a transition colour for a black smokey eye.

'T.O.' - N2,700*

This was my favourite shadow. You know how typically you need at least two colours to create a smokey eye? I found that I could use just this to create a similar effect. It's perfect for those lazy mornings (which is EVERY weekday morning for me) where you want some colour on your lids with some depth, but can't be bothered to get 3 shades going in. I use a flat brush and pat this all over my mobile lid and into the crease a little, then use a clean fluffy brush to blend out the crease. Instant soft smokey eye! This is a medium choclate-brown shade (no red undertones here) and will work as a great transition colour for dark skin tones.

I will warn you, these shadows are quite powdery so there is a bit of fall out from these. So use some shadow shields when working with these, or work on your eyes before your base; which is what I do.
